Using Ayurvedic & Allopathic Medicines

by Anay Abreu, Ayurvedic Specialist

As more people seek a holistic approach to their health, allopathic and Ayurvedic medicines have become increasingly common. Understanding the compatibility of these two forms of medicine is essential to ensure the safety and effectiveness of the treatments being used.

Allopathic medicine is the conventional western medical system that uses drugs and other interventions to treat illness and relieve symptoms.

Ayurvedic medicine, on the other hand, is an ancient Indian system of medicine that emphasizes the use of natural ingredients, herbs, herbal formulations and treatments to restore balance to the body and mind.

Compatibility of Allopathic and Ayurvedic Medicines

The compatibility of allopathic and Ayurvedic medicines depends on several factors, such as

  • The treatment type
  • The active ingredients in the medicines, and
  • The individual’s health status.

A recent study on asymptomatic and mildly-symptomatic COVID-19 patients shows Ayurvedic medicines work better than the combined effort.

Allopathic vs Ayurvedic Medicines

Allopathic and Ayurvedic medicines differ in various ways, including their

  • Approach to treatment
  • Source of ingredients, and
  • Method of administration.

Allopathic medicine, also known as conventional or Western medicine, is based on the scientific method and focuses on treating symptoms with drugs and surgery. It is often used to address acute health conditions and emergencies. Allopathic medicines are chemically manufactured and typically risk side effects such as drowsiness, nausea, or allergy.

On the other hand, Ayurvedic medicine, also known as traditional Indian medicine, is based on a holistic approach that considers the individual’s mind, body, and spirit. It focuses on restoring balance to the body’s natural state and promotes overall wellness. Ayurvedic medicines are made from natural ingredients such as herbs, spices, and minerals and have no side effects unless minerals and metals used in medicinal preparations are not properly purified.

The results of allopathic and Ayurvedic medicines can also differ. Allopathic medicine provides quick relief for specific symptoms but may not address the condition’s underlying cause. Ayurvedic medicine may take longer to show results, but it aims to address the root cause of the problem and promote overall well-being.

Considerations for Taking Allopathic and Ayurvedic Medicines Together

As a rule of thumb, in the case of taking both types of medicine, there should be a half an hour gap between them and several other important factors to consider.
